There have been incidents of companies selling faulty or defective products to consumers and then these very products have had a history of injuring people who have bought these. To ensure that companies do not sell dangerous or faulty products to the public with dangerous repercussions, consumer protection laws are in place. They are a form of government rules and regulations designed to protect the interests of consumers.

The protection laws introduced or sanctioned can or may require businesses to disclose the detailed information about products, especially in areas where safety or public health is an issue. As such, the food sub-sector is one of the most heavily regulated areas of consumer production sectors; apart from food, medicine is also highly regulated to ensure that drugs are safe when they are released for the general public thus, preventing them from causing them any harm.

Apart from the laws that regulate the production of goods and safety, consumer protection is tied in closely with consumer rights. The idea is that people, as consumers, have several rights that cannot be impinged upon or breached and violated by companies that make goods so one of the biggest rights - people have a right not to be injured by something that is marketed as safe – is sacrosanct and thus, has to be protected against.

In addition to the idea of consumer rights, consumer organizations derive their inspiration from the idea of consumer production and these organizations are all designed to help consumers make better and more informed choices when buying products. The interests of all consumers are protected by promoting competition in the markets and even if the market indirectly serves consumers, if there is economic efficiency and competition, the consumers will benefit from this and the laws that govern this are part of competition laws.

Consumer activism is one of the best ways to protect consumers and this is best served by non-government organizations and individuals. So, by eliminating the government entity, consumers get a more unbiased view of products and materials that they are potentially buying. Also, you are assured that someone is always looking out for the consumer’s best interests.

Consumer protection law or consumer law is part of public law and regulates private law relationships that exist between individual consumers and businesses that sell these goods and services.
